West Yorkshire inclusive cycling project

Do you provide disability cycling services in West Yorkshire? We want to hear from you!

Project overview

Everybody’s Cycling is being funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority until early 2027 to develop a region-wide accessible cycling offer.

This work includes:

1. An audit of the current provision for people with disabilities to access cycling activities.

2. Working with existing providers and community stakeholders to improve their offer, develop new activities and support new groups to grow.

It’s part of the Combined Authority’s work to create a more inclusive West Yorkshire for all. You can read more about this exciting new project and how you can be involved below.

About the audit

The team at Everybody’s Cycling will be researching, visiting and reporting on existing and potential inclusive cycling provision and initiatives offered across five West Yorkshire local authority areas of Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield.

We are making connections with and visiting:

  • disability support groups and organisations
  • local councils
  • active travel hubs
  • sport and leisure centres
  • special schools
  • community centres
  • Any other organisation, group or venue with inclusive cycling links

The aim is to create a consistent, comprehensive and inclusive cycling network, that anyone can access regardless of ability, age, and additional needs.

This project will map the existing provision and identify and address any gaps discovered. This project will also help build up delivery capacity, raise awareness of inclusive cycling opportunities and reach new participants (children and adults).

The audit will provide insight into the inclusive cycling provision currently available in West Yorkshire and what support is needed to improve provision and increase usage.

The overall project aim is to increase participation and attendance within the inclusive cycle network by 10%.

About you

We’re here to help and learn more about your activities and services, and we can provide support and advice if needed.

Please get in touch with the team at Everybody’s Cycling if you:

  • offer inclusive cycling activities or disability support services.
  • offer complementary initiatives for people with disabilities or special needs, such as inclusive cycle loans, guided rides and holidays.
  • have any news, events, cycle route upgrades or anything else related to the inclusive cycling world you would like to share to include in West Yorkshire inclusive cycling newsletter.
  • are interested in being involved in this project or if you would like to learn more.

The audit will help to create a network of inclusive cycling providers by sharing best practice and knowledge. It will also lead to a programme of events and support measures to improve the quality and extent of inclusive cycling provision in West Yorkshire.

This exciting project will help to encourage more people, regardless of their age or ability, to experience the wellbeing benefits of cycling.

Example audit questions

Here are examples of some of the questions we’ll be asking as part of the audit:

  • Where are the activities delivered and how often?
  • Who and how many people attend these activities?
  • What support do you need to improve your offering and how can the activities be extended to reach more people?
  • What type and how many inclusive cycles are available to try?
  • Are the activities free or chargeable?
  • How are the activities promoted?
  • Do you offer any other cycling support services? Examples include cycle loan schemes and supported guided rides.

A member of our friendly team will speak with you over the phone, virtually or in person to discover more about your activities and services, and to find out what support you need.

Free inclusive cycling events

From Spring 2025, we are organising several free community engagement events across five West Yorkshire local authority areas (Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield).

The events will feature our  inclusive cycle try-out, which offers people with additional needs, their families, carers and disability professionals the chance to ride a wide range of adapted and unique cycles in fun and friendly environment.

We will also be offering inclusive cycling training sessions for staff, volunteers, carers and other support staff at inclusive cycling organisations and groups. These training sessions include learning how to maintain and repair inclusive cycles (e.g. wheelchair transporters, handcycles, tandems, trikes, recumbents and others), and how to safely operate a range of adapted cycles.

The training format is flexible and we're happy to discuss how we can tailor a session to suit your group or organisation training needs.

If your organisation or group would like to be involved with these events, either by hosting or attending the these, please contact us.

Please keep an eye on our News page and social media channels for event updates.
